STORY TIME

Salty Simmers

Simmers Tells me a Story

William Simmers decided to tell me a story about a thing that he thinks was a stupid idea. He sat on a couch across from me as I set up the camera to record him. I sent up a light to his left to illuminate the left half of his face as he prepared to speak. It also left his right half of his face in a little bit of shadow.

He told me a story about him playing Fifa for a challenge with his friend. I decided to use clip grab to overlay B Roll of things he was talking about. I layered and cut them to match what he was saying in the video. It came out pretty well, and It was a pretty funny story. Instead of interviews we decided to tell stories about things we thought were stupid or regret, because it would turn out to be a much more interesting video with more interesting B-Roll and overlays. I think Simmer's story about licking a salt lamp made for a way better video than if I asked him some questions about himself. This was a very funny video to me.

I Tell Bruce a Story

Bruce tells Simmers a Story

As of when I am writing this, Bruce has not edited or posted the video of me telling him a story, so Its not posted on my website. After sitting down in the interview hot seat, I decided to tell Bruce the story of how I accidentally hitched a ride on a logging truck. I thought It was really funny, interesting and would make for an interesting edit. I'm sure when he finishes it I will love it and I will write more about what he did.

For this story, I helped Simmers set up his camera to interview Bruce. Then I had to use the bathroom, so I was gone for a couple minutes. When I came back, Bruce was finishing a wild story about a fictional character in the mafia or something. I was very excited to see what Simmers did with this Story. He took a much different approach than I thought he would. Instead of layering Bruce's story with a bunch of b roll, he kept it as a straight shot, which I think made it pretty powerful. It's basically a complete deviant from the project guidelines, but change can often be good. I really enjoyed the video, but I don't know whether to attribute that to simmers take or Bruce's interesting story.

The Snurf

Since the other interviews took so long to edit, I decided I needed to create a new video to take the place of the interviews incase they didn't happen. The result was a funny little short that I was pretty proud of.

During Class, while waiting for someone to finish editing, Trevor, Simmers and Me went outside with a little Vixia camera and a big goal: To make a stupid surfing video. We succeeded. We started off by getting B Roll of us getting prepared, as all action sport videos should start. Then we just tried to survive while riding down steep hills of ice.

For the editing, awe started by just selecting all the clips we wanted to use. Then we created an outline in final cut, and I chose the song Rhiannon by Fleetwood Mac. We placed the clips in order, and I went through and matched up the song's audio with the visuals from the videos. My favorite part of editing is matching song notes with visual cues. I think the video turned out both visually and Audibly pleasing.
