Scene Review

"I am your father" from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

Scene starts with the Millenium Falcon flying away, which will set up a later scene. There are lasers shooting at it so you can tell there is conflict happening. There’s dramatic music helping set up the scene too. The next scene starts with an establishing shot of the setting, on a peninsula ina huge pit. Under quiet music, Luke sneaks into a corridor, looking for darts Vader. The movie then uses a jump scare as Vader jumps out of hiding and attacks him. Then there is some fighting with what was at the time a groundbreaking and never before seen style with lightsabers in an epic duel. The fight does back and forth and gradually moves towards the important part of the scene, out on a a walkway. Vader gains the upper hand by knocking down Luke and telling him to surrender. Luke manages to fight back up to his feet. They fight a little more and Luke lands a hit, but the movie portrays Vaders strength as it barely affects him. Vader then wins the fight by cutting off Luke’s hand. Vader tells Luke to give up and join him. Luke refuses and crawls farther out on the structure, telling Vader that he hates him for killing his father. Then Vader Drops the most famous line in movie history: “No, I am your Father.” So Heat. Then the dramatic music kicks back in as Luke Over-Acts to show his dismay and disbelief. (A cool factoid is That the only people who knew that this was the twist were Vader and George Lucas, So mark Hamill's reaction was improv) Vader asks Luke to join him, and Luke refuses, opting instead to jump to his apparent CGI death in the Giant Pit.
